Welcome to Troika Editions

1st June 2010

We are delighted to bring you our June Critic's Choice by Jon Levy, founder of 8 Magazine, Foto8.com and the Host Gallery.

Jon has chosen an image from "Farewell in Labrador" by Kurt Tong and writes, "... I would like to choose Kurt Tong's "Christmas Tree" for the simple reason that like much of Kurt's work it makes me feel simultaneously uplifted and yet forlorn. Kurt has in my opinion a real complexity to his photography but disguises it in simplicity.

The christmas tree in this image is not shouting out at me to notice it, the fairy lights on the roof and the chimney are making most of the noise. But Kurt is not ignoring the tree, or making fun of its bareness, to me at least he's noticing its indomitable spirit and acknowledging its special position in prime view of the window, kept company by a small bed of purple flowers at its base.

It's a Kurt Tong image all over, harking to better times when the lights were on and the branches full and green but even now Kurt makes me feel joy in this genuine admiration for a tree."

Christmas Tree

Kurt spent nearly three months exploring the long coastline of Labrador to produce a visual story that with a poetic sensibility conjures images of isolation and loneliness.

This series of emotive landscapes, portraits and still lives evoke memories of a bygone era.

The "Christmas Tree" was selected for the Royal Photographic Society's International Print Exhibition in May 2009.

We Recommend: Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed

We Recommend: Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed

This year's selection of young graduates in The Photographers' Gallery's annual Fresh Faced and Wild Eyed was perhaps a little disappointing in its inclusion of so much documentary work. With the exception of Briony Campbell's touching photo diary of the death of her father little else offered much to further our understanding or appreciation of the medium.

Graduates who stood out for using photography in a more inventive and exploratory way include Anna Linderstram, Laura Palmer, Ozant Kamaci and Dong Yoon Kim.

The exhibition closes this weekend on the 6th June so if you can't make it to the show, you can view all the work online.

Collections

Collections

We are delighted to announce that 1000 Words Magazine will be joining Collections with work from JH Engstrom, Sarah Small, Bruno Quinquet, Virgilio Ferreira, Trinidad Carrillo and Simon Roberts.

1000 Words Magazine is an online publication, run by writer and photography critic Tim Clark. Dedicated to highlighting contemporary fine art photography and encouraging critical writing, the magazine is published quarterly and is must see for anyone interested in art photography.

Collections is a new initiative that will provide some of the key photography organisations in the UK an opportunity to showcase their own photography collections online.

Motivated by the cuts in the UK government’s support of the arts Troika Editions has started Collections to give key photography organisations the chance to pursue an alternative funding avenue through the sale of limited edition photographic prints.

Announced last month we will be working with FORMAT International Photography Festival and their Exposure Open. Twelve selected photographers will be given the opportunity to show case their work on Troika Editions and become part of the FORMAT Collection, with funds raised through the sale of these prints going to the artist and in support of FORMAT.

Troika Editions will also be sponsoring the new FORMAT Collection Award with £250 worth of production costs and a group exhibition for three winning artists to be held during London’s Photomonth 2010 at the Troika Editions gallery in London.

More partners will be announced in the coming weeks.
